For the festival, I created a large-scale, site-specific installation using fiber and ink on paper. Paper airplanes lined with text collected from various sources highlight statistics on global air pollution. The carrier of this commentary is often associated with light-hearted, frivolous flights, a direct reflection on human nature's tendency to ignore precarious situations. The installation, Into the Smog forecasts a future that fades into an abyss of toxicity unless issues of air pollution are controlled.
My installation was juried and selected by a committee organized by 48 Stunden Neukölln, the largest independent festival of the arts in Berlin. For 48 hours, the district of Neukölln is transformed into an art hub filled with galleries and unique spaces that can attract more than 70,000 visitors. The 2021 festival theme is Air (Luft). Air surrounds us and permeates us. It is invisible and omnipresent. Without it, we cannot live. It is there from our first scream to our last breath.
