Exhibition Dates: June 28 - September 15, 2024
Gallery UNO Projektraum Berlin
Wissmannstraße 12, 12049 Berlin, Germany
The 48 Stunden Neukölln 2024 Festival theme: Urban Silence investigates the role of sound in urban landscapes. The process of listening is a subjective experience. Sounds of the city are piercing or pleasant. Moments of silence, likewise, are stressful or soothing.
Huss' kinetic installation, FOR THE BIRDS examines the fluctuating relationship between humans and wildlife. Man-made materials such as holographic discs and bells, often used to deter birds from nesting on architecture, are intertwined with twigs. Hypnotic reflections of light and melodic sounds radiate as the installation spins in circles while suspended from the ceiling.
The title, FOR THE BIRDS is a phrase defined in two ways. It is a choice to either ignore or recognize the impact that humans have on nature. As urban environments engulf natural habitats, wildlife disappears.
48 Stunden Neukölln is an art festival and a platform for Berlin's independent art scene. From June 28-30, Neukölln is transformed into an artistic experimental field for 48 hours. 230 projects at over 180 locations present performances, visual art, music and participatory projects.
The installation by American artist Nikkole Huss was selected by the festival committee and curated in Gallery UNO Projektraum Berlin by Barbara Goebels-Cattaneo.
