The 48 Stunden Neukölln 2022 festival theme, "Kafayı yemek" is a multifaceted Turkish phrase. It is defined as a having an extreme reaction to a dramatic event.
The immersive installation, BENEATH THE SURFACE is inspired by overwhelming feelings of isolation due to the global pandemic. The site-specific, fiber installation consists of hand-painted, stretched silk circles that continuously spin while suspended from the ceiling at various heights. The imagery portrays a fictional underwater, botanical nursery. Smooth and spiny succulents are fleshy, engorged and retaining water in various stages of rejuvenation. Amid pandemic nerves, there is comfort in the appreciation of a land of wonder, imagination and the possibility of recovery.
48 Stunden Neukölln is an art festival and a platform for Berlin's independent art scene. From June 24-26, Neukölln is transformed into an artistic experimental field for 48 hours. 230 projects at over 180 locations present performances, visual art, music and participatory projects.
